Ledger Live App: Security and Asset Management Overview
Ledger Live App: Security and Asset Management Overview
Setting up the Ledger Live app takes only a short time, but the order of the steps matters for security. This overview explains how to set up the Ledger Live app with your Ledger device, how the app and the device share the work, what the PIN, the password lock and the recovery phrase each protect, and where the protections stop. This site is informational and is not affiliated with Ledger.
First setup of the Ledger Live app with a new device
Setup follows a fixed pattern: get the app from an official source, connect the device, create the device’s own protections, then add coin apps and accounts. Ledger Live is only the interface, and the secrets are created on the device.
Get the app from an official source
Use ledger.com for the desktop version on Windows, macOS or Linux, or the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play (Android) for the mobile version. The macOS version is not in the Mac App Store. An Android APK should only come from ledger.com, never from third-party APK sites.
Create the PIN and the recovery phrase on the device
During first setup the device asks you to choose a PIN and then generates a 24-word recovery phrase and shows it on its own screen. Write the words on paper or metal and keep them offline. Ledger Live will never ask you to enter your 24-word recovery phrase, and nothing in the setup requires you to type it into a computer or phone.
Install coin apps and add accounts
With the device connected and unlocked, use My Ledger in Ledger Live to install the coin apps you need onto the device, such as the Bitcoin or Ethereum app. Then add accounts in the app. Your balances appear after the app syncs with the network.
How the app and the device work together
The app coordinates and the device decides. Ledger Live builds the transaction and the device signs it only after you check and confirm the details on its screen.
What the cable or Bluetooth link carries
Desktop connects to the device by USB. Bluetooth is used only between a Nano X (and, where Ledger supports it, newer devices) and the mobile app. The connection carries transaction requests and signed results, while the keys stay on the device.
Why the app needs an internet connection
The app retrieves balances, prices and network data, which is why it shows an empty or outdated view when it is offline. Network access does not give it any ability to spend your funds.
PIN, password lock and recovery phrase: what each one does
There is no cloud account, username, server password or code sent by SMS or e-mail in Ledger Live. Three separate protections matter instead.
The device PIN
The PIN unlocks the Ledger device. Without it, the device cannot be used to approve transactions.
The optional password lock
You can set a password lock in Ledger Live to protect the app on that computer or phone. It is local only. If you forget it, reinstall Ledger Live and reconnect your device.
The recovery phrase
The 24-word phrase is the backup of your wallet. Anyone who has it can rebuild your accounts on another device, so it must stay offline and secret. Restoring a wallet happens on the device itself.
Which way of getting the app suits which situation
The table compares the official routes. Anything outside these routes, such as a mirror, a forum file or a link in a message, cannot be trusted.
| Route | Best suited to | How it connects | How to confirm the source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop version from ledger.com | Setup, device updates and managing several accounts | USB | Type the address ledger.com yourself |
| iOS version from the Apple App Store | Checking balances and approving on the go | Bluetooth with a Nano X | Open the store page from a link on ledger.com |
| Android version from Google Play | Checking balances and approving on the go | Bluetooth with a Nano X; USB where supported, check ledger.com | Open the store page from a link on ledger.com |
The desktop version suits a first setup and larger jobs on a screen you trust. The mobile version suits travel and quick checks. Many owners use both with the same device. Current device compatibility is listed on ledger.com, and the original Nano S is discontinued, although existing devices still work.
Where the protections stop
The device protects the keys during signing. It cannot protect you from a lookalike download page, an address swapped on your screen or a recovery phrase typed into a fake form.
Requests for the recovery phrase
No support channel, wallet, update or recovery tool legitimately asks for the 24 words. A page or app that does is trying to steal them.
Addresses swapped after you copy them
Malware can replace a copied address. Compare the address on the device screen with the one you intended before you confirm.
Approvals you cannot read
If the device cannot show an amount and recipient you recognize, reject the request.
Five checks to confirm your setup is genuine
Run these checks after a fresh installation. Keep your device unlocked and the official site open on a second device if you can.
Step 1: Confirm where the app came from
The app should come from ledger.com or an official store listing linked from it. If it came from anywhere else, delete it and start again from ledger.com.
Step 2: Check that the phrase was created on the device
The 24 words must have appeared on the device screen. A device that arrives with a phrase already written down for you should not be used.
Step 3: Look for phrase prompts
A genuine app has no field for your recovery phrase. If you see one, close the app.
Step 4: Compare a receive address
Open Receive in the app, then confirm that the same address appears on the device screen before you share it.
Step 5: Update the device through the app
Device firmware is installed through Ledger Live (My Ledger) by following the prompts on the screen and on the device. Do not disconnect during the update, and do not use firmware files from anywhere else.
What stays optional or changes over time
Supported coins, partner services and the layout of the app change between versions. Ledger Recover is an optional paid subscription service that stores an encrypted, fragmented backup of the phrase with independent providers after identity verification. You do not need it to use Ledger Live, and its details are on ledger.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Ledger Live without a Ledger device?
You can install the app, but receiving and sending crypto needs a Ledger device because the keys and the approval step live on it. The app on its own cannot sign transactions.
What if Ledger Live asks for a firmware update during setup?
Firmware updates are installed through Ledger Live (My Ledger). Follow the prompts on the screen and confirm on the device, and do not disconnect until the update finishes. If it fails, reconnect the device and try again, or contact Ledger Support through ledger.com.
Where should I keep my 24-word recovery phrase?
Keep it offline on paper or metal in a private place. Do not photograph it or store it in notes, cloud storage or a password manager. Ledger Live does not need it.
Is the mobile version less safe than the desktop version?
Both rely on the same model: the device holds the keys and you confirm on its screen. Each platform has its own risks, such as malicious apps on a phone or malware on a computer, so check the device screen every time you send.
Which settings should I review after setup?
Choose a PIN that others cannot guess, consider setting the password lock in Ledger Live, and confirm that your recovery phrase is stored offline. Verify each receive address on the device screen before sharing it.
